How to record your gameplay – XBox and PS3

By admin  //  Stuff you can buy online  //  16 Comments

Since I started making Call of Duty MW2 montages etc, I’ve often been asked how I managed to record my XBox and PS3 gameplay. Most people seem to be under the illusion that I just have a really good video camera pointed at my TV screen.

Ok… So… How do I record my XBox and PS3 gameplay?

To record footage of yourself playing PS3 and XBox games, you will need to buy a relatively cheap capture card called Easycap. In my opinion, Easycap is great as it’s very cheap and it does the trick. Other higher-quality HD capture cards cost nearly $200+ dollars, which is far more than what I am willing to spend (maybe if I get a lot more subscribers, I’ll save up for one). Easycap itself is a USB-powered device that you connect up to your PC or Laptop. It comes with its own software and is pretty easy to setup – not that you’d have a problem getting it setup as its a pretty popular capture card and there are plenty of Youtube videos telling you how to set it up to work with your PS3 or XBox.

When Easycap is setup and recording, everything that you see on your television screen will be recorded to the hard drive on your PC or Laptop. You can then edit your gameplay footage using Windows Movie Maker or Sony Vegas (professional video editor). You get a choice of video formats. In my case; all footage of my XBox / PS3 gameplay is recorded in AVI format (high quality video files).

The Easycap USB Video Capture Adapter can be bought online for just over $10 on Amazon.com

  • bro if my ps3/xbox is set up to the tv usuing and hdmi cable can the easy cap just record that picture btu in a lower resoloution? thanks

    • Hi. No, you’ll need to either play through SCART or Composite. Composite is just as good a definition to play through, as far as I’m aware. What console do you use?

  • Hauppage HD PVR is better isn’t it?

    • A lot better. It also costs a lot more, though.

  • Hello. Can I buy a EasyCap at my regular store (Wall-Mart, Shoppers Drugmart, Best Buy, Future Shop, ect.)? Also, this is for my PlayStation3. If you want to add me, my Gamertag is H3cTiiC_PrOTiigY. Send me a message if you would like to play. You can also reach me a (email deleted by admin so that the poster doesn’t get spammed to death).
    Thank You,

  • Do you need to buy anything other than the easycap adapter? Like is there an extra special cord I need to connect from this to the ps3?

  • hey does your pc need to be on or can u just stick ur usb stick in and record when your pc is off????? and look back it later on cheers =)

    • Your PC needs to be on.

  • so what i hear is, i cannot record hdmi gameplay thorugh a capture card? so i have to play using the av type cable, isn’t there a way to be able to use the hdmi and hook it upto the the capture card or will it not simply work?

    • To record via HDMI, you will need a Black Magic Intensity Pro HD Capture Card. The thing with Black Magic Intensity Pro is that you’ll need a pretty powerful computer/laptop to record from it. The HD PVR doesn’t record via HDMI either – it uses the component cables.
